Sandia Hawkwatch information with directions

From the current issue of Central New Mexico Audubon Newsletter (the Burrowing Owl).

Although it’s no longer being monitored by HWI, over 4,000 raptors will pass within view of the observation point during March and April. Remember to take extra clothing, water, sunscreen, and wear proper footwear. Again Roger Grimshaw will visit the site during the last two weeks in March. If you’re interested in being there at the same time, let Bobbie know ( hwabq@hawkwatch.org ).

Directions: Drive East out of Albuquerque on I-40. Take the first exit east of Tramway Boulevard at Carnuel. Continue East on US-66 approximately 1.8 miles. Turn left into the subdivision of Monticello, where you will see a large white sign at the entrance. The paved road jogs to the right, then left. Continue north uphill on Siempre Verde, which dead-ends in a parking area.

From the north end of the parking area, hike north onthe Three Gun Spring Trail. Turn east (right) after the fence, and follow the trail to the southern most end of cliffs. The observation point is a large rock pile 2/3rds of the way up to the cliff face. The trail to the observation site is 1.5 miles uphill (1,500’ elevation gain), and the hike may take about one hour or more one way.
