RFI: Looking for target birds and may wish to hire a guide

I received this e-mail with a request for help in finding target birds and possibly a local birding guide.

Hi Ken and Mary Lou,

I'm thinking of doing a birding trip to New Mexico this winter. I am especially interested in seeing all three rosy finches as well as Lapland Longspur.

I also want to go to the various winter birding hotspots.

I would also consider hiring a bird guide for one or two days while I am there.

Any information could provide on fairly reliable places to see the rosy finches as well as the longspurs would be most appreciated. Also, if you could recommend bird guides I could hire as well as those winter birding hotspots I should not miss, I would be grateful.

Many thanks.

Hi, S--

First, if you plan to do any birding in the Albuquerque area or Central New Mexico, you should obtain a copy of a brand new book "Birding Hot Spots of Central New Mexico" by Judy Liddell & Barbara Hussey. See my review at this link

It is published by Texas A&M Press, with ISBN-13 978-1-60344-426-2 and is available for $16.47 from Amazon.com at this link

As for guides, I cannot recommend specific individuals, but have taken the liberty of publishing your query (anonymously) on the Sandia Crest Birding Forum.

You may wish to register on the Forum and request to be copied with any subsequent posts. I can also forward to you any posted responses, if you prefer.

Check the Central New Mexico Audubon and Thursday Birders' schedules (link is on the FORUM).

Do not hesitate to contact me, or post to the FORUM, if you have any further questions.

Good luck and good birding!
