Subject: NM: Northern Shrike
Friday, 9 Nov
At the location described by Jim (below), I found the Northern Shrike this morning. It took me one hour search until the bird showed up on the power line at the corner of Mt. Valley Rd. and Entranosa Lane at 9:15 AM. After excellent view, the shrike flew west into pinyons.
On the way back, I stopped at Sandia pond (at the bottom of Crest Rd.) and found Pied-billed Grebe - a new species, # 199, on my Sandia Mts. life list.

* At the intersection of NM 14 and the Crest Road, turn east onto
Frost Road.
* Take Frost Road east about 9 to 10 miles to a 4-way stop with
Mountain Valley Road and turn north on Mountain Valley Road.
* Travel north on Mountian Valley Road about a mile until it turns
to dirt where the pavement turns west at the intersection with Entranosa
Road.
* Continue north on the dirt portion of Mountain Valley Road about
0.8 miles.
* There is a house with a green metal roof and an out building with
a big yellow star on it to the east of the road. I first saw the bird on the
fence on the south side of this home's yard. I pushed it north to the
intersection with Entranosa Lane before it flew west into private property.
As I pushed it north it stayed on the fence or power lines east of the road.
After it flew off I drove down Entranosa Lane and returned about 5 minutes
later. It had returned to the power lines along the road, which may be a
good sign that it prefers that location.
