Interesting Clark's Nutcracker behavior

From Dave Weaver, Co-Coordinator of the feeding project:

Hi, Ken

...I went up to the Crest today to replenish the seed supply and so have attached a log update.  The birds are still very much in evidence, but the log entries are not.  The road is clear but narrowed in spots by drifts and a bit more snow is expected tonight.

Gene Romero [Manager of Crest House Gift Shop and Restaurant] said today that the banders have wrapped up for the season, although I had not heard.

I did see an interesting thing today.  At about mile 10 I saw a Clark's Nutcracker up in a fir tree and it had a dead vole in its beak. Opportunistic feeding, I suppose.

...I could see that the vole was fully formed and so probably not road kill, but of course could not tell otherwise whether it was carrion or capture. I have read that Clark's will take small mammals, so others have seen this sort of thing.

Be well and be safe,

Dave
