Dave Weaver and Fran Lusso are already planning for the arrival of the rosy-finches. They will put the feeder up late this month or early in November.
Many thanks to Lee Hopwood, who again has graciously contributed seed for the feeders.
During the past seven winters, the first Rosies arrived between October 27 and November 12. Since we started keeping accurate records in 2002, the average arrival date has been November 7.
In 2009 they showed up as the feeder was being put up, on October 27! Usually all three species are present within the following 7 to 10 days. The Sandia Crest House banding operation normally gets underway on Sunday mornings, soon after the flocks are established in good numbers, around the middle of the month of November.
If you are planning a visit to New Mexico for the
Festival of the Cranes in Socorro (November 15-20) do plan to include a stop at Sandia Crest, as the Rosies have been reliably present at that time.
