On Sunday afternoon, vehicles lined the road leading to a packed parking lot at the La Luz trailhead, mountain bikers cruised the single track near Otero Canyon in Tijeras and families filled picnic tables on Sandia Crest Road.

It marked the final day to access the Sandia and Mountainair ranger districts of the Cibola National Forest. The districts, and their trails, will be closed to the public from today until rains improve fire conditions. Sandia Crest Road will also be closed to non-residents...

Sandia Ranger District Lifts District Closure

Albuquerque, NM. July 7, 2014. Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands Forest Supervisor Elaine Kohrman announced that Sandia Ranger District is going out of district closure effective Monday, July 7, 2014.

"The Sandias have recently received a lot of rain, which has increased the moisture levels in the vegetation to the point where it should limit the spread of any human or natural-caused wildfires," said Kohrman. "In addition, the long-range weather forecast is predicting more rain for the area, which is a good indicator that the monsoon season has arrived."

Even though we have received rain please be careful when visiting your National Forests. Our forests and communities are vulnerable to fire and abandoned campfires seem to be the biggest issue on the Sandia Mountains.

Enjoy your National Forest and be fire safe!

One Less Spark, One Less Wildfire

The current Fire Restriction orders can be found on the Cibola's web site: http://www.fs.usda.gov/cibola in the "Alerts and Notices" section.
