Good news from Dave Weaver-- please keep an eye out for the rosies, as I would like to pin down the arrival date. Thanks!
Hi Ken, Hope everything is okay. Just wanted to let you know that we put up the feeder, signs, and the sighting log at the Crest House today. The rosies have not yet arrived, but Tony and Paul will put out seed when they see the first birds. They also plan to note the day of arrival and begin notes in the log. We also heard that Gene Romero is hospitalized... Don't know any more at this point. In the meantime, take care and enjoy the Fall! Best, Dave and Fran

Hi -
I am hoping to come visit Albuquerque sometime this winter for the sole purpose of seeing the rosy finches, so I began planning a trip. I called the Sandia Crest House Restaurant & Gift Shop to get more info on the establishment and learned that it will be closed from December through February. Those months are prime for rosy finch, so my questions is as follows: How would one go about seeing the finches if the building that provides the feeders will be closed? If I visit, will there be other feeders I can access to see the finches, or will there still be some way to access the feeders at the Sandia Crest House? I just want to make sure that I can still see the birds if I drive out there from Utah. I thank you in advance for your feedback! Justin |
Ack! I will be visiting from Michigan over the holidays and had planned to go up to see the rosy finches. The Crest House is a major draw for birders. Now I am worried that they won't get fed, so will learn to go elsewhere. I, too, will be interested in any responses you may get. Cheryl Sent from my iPad

Justin and Swiftbirder, we only received news of this today (see my post). We will do our best to keep everyone informed, as many people are making plans to visit during the winter, which is prime viewing season. Indeed, The American Birding Association is planning a meeting in Albuquerque during that time. I have confidence that some arrangement to provide an alternate placement of the feeder is possible. The feeders may only be placed on disturbed land, which is why they were permitted at the Crest House.
There had originally been two additional feeders in use just to the south of the building, also on disturbed land. They were readily visible from the lower parking lot and of course were not as convenient for viewers as the one on the deck. These two feeders were removed partly because they posed maintenance problems in deep snow conditions, and they "diluted" the rosy-finch flocks anyway. Their placement also caused birders to congregate at windows in the merchandise area, creating security concerns and inconvenience to shoppers and staff. Perhaps this fact may be the starting point for finding alternative placement other than on the deck of the building.

Thank you for the update, Rosyfinch - worst case scenario, I wil have to wait another winter to come out and visit. I was actually thinking of coming out next week to see the birds, but it does not sound as if they have arrived yet, nor has any seed placed in the feeders yet, so I likely still will not see the birds. :(
Anyhow, I'll keep an eye on the forums for updates, and thank you for keeping the info coming! -justin |

Hi, Gary--
I'm pretty confident that the Rosies will appear within a day or so after the feeders are filled with seed, despite the mild weather in recent weeks. Visit rosyfinch.com and see the pull-down menus for suggested birding locations. Start with the road up to Sandia Crest itself. Peruse recent sightings reports on the AZ/NM RBA and see CNMAS weekend and Thursday birder schedule here: http://sandia-crest-birding-forum.3149816.n2.nabble.com/General-Birding-and-Natural-History-of-East-Mountains-f5076730.html;cid=1352842948003-523 Good birding, and let us all know how things turn out! Ken
